A mark of the wise is a hearing heart. When Solomon prayed and asked God for wisdom, the Scripture reveals this to be that he asked for a “discerning heart,” an “understanding heart,” a “heart able to be taught,” a “hearing heart,” or an “obedient heart.”
All of these “meanings” come from different translations of a part of Scripture out of 1 Kings 3:9. And the oldest version I own, the 1599 Geneva Bible translates it “obedient” heart. You see it’s vital that we can hear God but even more important that we obey God when we do. So here’s what wisdom reveals to us about how to hear and train our hearts to find the wisdom we will need for every situation and endeavor of our life.
We find it in Proverbs 2, verses 2 through 5. It’s all about perceiving and understanding true wisdom so that we can learn and grow in knowledge. You see knowledge is where it begins; wisdom results when we apply what we know. BUT, we have to perceive wisdom first.
So we find wisdom in God’s Word, but we must first seek it to find it. Right? Seeking, pursuing, going after God’s way’s of being and doing right will result in apprehension for the one who pursues. Once found we must release it into everyone God has given us opportunity to influence with the truth and the Gospel.
You are the one who contains the answer that every mountain of influence needs to hear. But you must be filled first in order to release it or pour it out. Be filled by prayer. Pray and ask God to release His wisdom into your heart, then be a student of the Word, especially of Proverbs where all of God’s wisdom is contained.
Proverbs 20:5 says, “Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.” You have been given everything you need, the Ancient of Days lives inside of you. You access everything through the heart or spirit, the inner man. Your drawing is prayer, pursuit, study, and release. What you have received you must give and when you release it everyone and everything around you who can receive will be changed.
Train yourself to pursue, to seek, and to sow God’s Word deep into your heart. When you do you will prove yourself faithful and trustworthy to handle the treasures of heaven. Like Jesus said in the Parable of the Talents, those who are found faithful in least will be made rulers of much.
You are a part of a chosen generation, a royal priesthood. It’s time to step forward and be the answer He has created you to be.
For such a time as this! Go!
